How the Pros Play Tournaments vs. Cash Games [2022]

What the Pros Play: Tournaments vs. Money Games [2022]

Do you prefer to play cash games or poker tournaments? This is the question that many poker players ask when they start to play.

While poker tournaments can be easier to learn for beginners, they are also more time-consuming and will result in inconsistent winnings. Cash games are much more manageable and will result in a greater consistency of your winnings. You can choose between tournaments or cash games.

Everyone starts in tournaments with the same amount, but the blinds rise at regular intervals. The goal of the tournament, is to win all other's chips. Real money payouts are available depending on your place in the tournament.

However, in cash games the chips in front of your represent real dollar amounts. The blinds do not increase. Additionally, you can't be eliminated and you have the option to reload at any time. The goal is to simply win more chips than what you started with.

Personally, I have taken the game of poker seriously since its inception. So I wanted to find out which format the pros used. Because I knew that the pros would choose which format was more lucrative.

Below is a simple infographic that I created to compare the advantages and disadvantages between cash games and tournaments.

Then boom, they'll be on fire and have a great month. Sometimes they may even be able to win several tournaments at once. They'll make up the difference for those dry months.

Cash games are a great way to make consistent cashflow if that is what you're looking for. If you're up for insane variance, tournaments may be right for you.

2. Cash Games Offer More Flexibility

You should also consider being flexible with your time. Do you enjoy a social lifestyle? Would you like to be in control of your time and plan ahead?

Cash games also have the advantage. Cash games are available online at any time. The games are accessible online 24/7, so you can play when you like.

You need to plan your tournament play around key events, and you have no idea if you will play for 30 minutes, 2 or 3 hours.

This makes planning your life challenging. It is a big problem for me because I believe that a good balance between work and life is crucial to better results.
