How to Play Texas Holdem Poker
One advantage of poker is that it can be won by a skilled player. Because the odds against the player are always against them, the player loses in the end. But with poker, you don't have to fight the casino; you can only compete against other players. Your opponents in poker do not have such a mathematical advantage. It's a level field.
Hold'em can be very simple to learn. I won a game in the exact same game I learned to play.
Poker is dynamic. While you are playing, you can come up with your strategy based on many variables. One of these variables is how your opponents will play their hands. This makes the game much more interesting and competitive.
There are many poker variations, but Texas Holdem Poker is the most well-known.
The Basics of Texas Holdem
The Object. The object is the same as all gambling: to win money. You're not trying to win your own money but the money of other players. The casino earns its money by taking a percentage of the money that players wager. The standard casino-style chips are used for betting.
Play. Texas Holdem is different from other casino games. Instead of placing a wager, getting your cards and then ending it, you can get cards, place a bet and get more cards. You can also continue the process by betting again if necessary. You can always bail, which is known as folding. This allows you to stop kicking money in but also means that you will lose any money you have already bet as you are no longer in the game.
If everyone else folds the last person standing is declared the winner. If more than one person remains in the game, the last remaining player wins. (Learn more about that in a second.) The pot is what they win, which is all of the money that players have put into that round. A rake is usually 5% and is the commission that the casino receives for hosting the game.
We'll be covering the details of betting in a moment, but let's start by looking at how poker hand rankings are created so you can see different poker hands and decide which one is the winner.
Poker Hand Rankings
Five cards are required to make a poker hand. These are the ranks of poker hands from worst-to-best. It doesn't really matter in what order the cards arrive. You can arrange them in any order you like, and it will be a winning hand.
High Card. If there are no better hands, the winner is the one with highest cards. The highest cards are Jack, Queen King, Ace and King. We abbreviate this J, Q K, A. The hand [K7 4 3] beats [Q7 4 4 3] because the king beats the queen. If two players have the same highest card, the second-highest card is the winner. K J 9 6 5 vs. K 10 9 6 5, because jack beats 10. If two players have the same high-card and second-highest cards then you will look at the highest card.
Pair. A pair is a hand which has two cards with the same rank. For example, [9 9 5 3 4 3]. A pair beats a higher card, regardless of its rank. For example, [2 2 9 5 4] beats [A K Q J 9]. All of those high cards won't work against a pair with twos. If there is a pair of players, the highest pair wins. If you have two of the same players, then you will look at the highest card in the pair to determine who wins.
Two Pair. A hand looking like [4 4 7 7 7 Q]. Breaking ties is treated the same as regular pairs.
Three of a type. It's exactly what it sounds. This means that three cards of the exact same rank are dealt, such as [5 5 6 9 8]. If multiple players have the same cards as pairs, the highest card wins. High cards break ties.
Straight. Straights are hands with consecutive ranks such as [6 7 9 10]. An ace can be counted as 1 to complete straights where the cards are 2, 3, 4 and 5. Or as a highcard to complete straights where the cards are 10, J. Q. K.
Flush. Flush.
Full House. A pair and three of a type, such as 9-9-4-4 4.
Four of a Kind Four of the exact same rank, such as 3 3 J 3.
Straight flush. A hand that can be both a straight or a flush like 7 8 9 10, J.
Royal flush. Straight flush, which is made up of the highest cards like 10 J Q KA. Of course, they don't necessarily have to be in that order. Q 10 AJ K is still a royal straight. The Royal Flush in video poker is the highest jackpot. It occurs about once every 40,000 hands or one week and a quarter of full-time gameplay. It could even be worse. The typical jackpot for a slot machine is only one in every 262,144 spins.
