Razz Poker: Rules & Basic Strategy
Razz Poker Basic Strategy & Rules
Razz is a style of stud poker in which the aim is for the lowest possible hand. Razz straights, flushes and Aces do not count. Aces are always low in Razz poker so 5-4-3-2 A is the best possible hand.
Razz will give you 7 cards. However, only 5 cards can be used to make your hand.
T.J Cloutier won 2004 World Series of Poker Razz. This game has gained immense popularity, and is now included in many online poker rooms.
The A-2-3 cards are the best to be dealt to begin a hand. It is best to not play your hand if you get dealt a pair.
How To Play Razz
Razz is usually played with 8 players. However, it can be played "heads up" with as few as two people. Limit betting is normal.
Each player pays an int to begin the hand. The player is dealt 2 cards facedown and 1 card faceup. If two players have identical high cards, the hand is decided by suit. Hearts, diamonds, hearts and clubs are next.
Play will then go clockwise. Each player will be dealt a new card face-up, with betting beginning with the lowest hand. The 7th and final dealt card is now face-down. Bets continue with the first to place a bet on the 6th card.
Basic Razz Poker Strategy
Razz requires that you pay attention both to your starting hand as well as the face-up cards of other players. A pair is never a good start to a hand. If you have a face-up card (King Queen, Jack), it's not a good idea to stay in a hand unless you have better position and all the cards at the table are high.
Also, you need to make sure that you react to the face up cards of another player. It's a good idea, for example, to wager on the face up cards of another player if you are 5 cards deep in a hand.
If you have 2-3-4 cards in hand and see other players with cards that are 3, 4, 4, 2 or 2, your hand is stronger. Your chances of getting your hand to pair is significantly lower. Bluffing is an important part of Razz. You must always play the hands of other players as well as yours. Razz poker is different from Omaha because you can see what each player has in their hands and be able to play what's there. Razz Poker Strategy
